Sleep apnoea is a condition where there is insufficient flow of air to the lungs as the soft airway collapses. This causes a lack of oxygen to the brain, resulting in day time tiredness, lack of energy and concentration, headaches and falling asleep easily. It is estimated that 58% of moderate to severe sleep apnoea is due to weight excess. Other risk factors include increasing age, being male and the structure of the mouth. Weight reduction can significantly reduce the number of apnoeas per night in moderate to severe sleep apnoea, improving energy and reduce reliance on CPAP machine. (Peppard 2000)
