Body Composition Analysis
A body composition analysis can be a helpful tool to understand your metabolic rate, muscle mass and fat mass when you commence your weight loss treatment and ensure you are losing weight from the right places (ie. fat stores) throughout your program.
How does body composition analysis work?
At Alevia, we can offer you an in-house body composition scan, with our state-of-the-art equipment at our Wantirna clinic.
We will check with you first that you’re not pregnant and you don’t have an electrical device in your body (such as a pacemaker) to ensure your safety.
You will need to take off your shoes and socks (or stockings) for the scan, before standing on a platform and holding a grip in each hand so that the machine can send a small electrical impulse through each limb (don’t worry – you don’t feel a thing!) and analyse your body composition. The scan itself only takes about 20-30 seconds, but it will give you a full report of your body composition, including your:
- Total skeletal muscle mass
- Total body fat in kgs and as a percentage
- Visceral fat (fat around organs)
- Total body water
- Segmental muscle and fat analysis
- Bone mass
- Basal metabolic rate
- Metabolic age
How can a body composition analysis help?
The body composition scan can help to provide a bigger picture of your body’s make-up and show you more than just the number on the scales. For example, you and your Alevia doctor might look at the scan’s report together and determine that you should increase your level of muscle resistance exercise, to improve your percentage muscle mass. We also do scans every 3 months to ensure you are losing weight from the right places (fat mass) and preserving that all important muscle mass so that it is easier to keep weight off in the long term.
