Mindfulness is a great way to improve your mental health, reduce your stress levels and appreciate the world around you. Try this little exercise with a cup of herbal tea to soothe the mind.
Make yourself a cup of herbal tea in a quiet time when you can fully relax without any time restraints. You could even put some meditation music on in the background to create a relaxing and calm atmosphere.
Pay attention to the sounds of the water as you pour the tea into your cup.
Take your tea and sit somewhere comfortable and quiet. Hold the tea in both hands and notice the warmth of the mug against your skin.
Close your eyes and inhale the aroma of the tea. What does it smell like? Is it fruity? Floral? Sweet?
Notice the steam rising from the mug and try to breathe it in slowly.
Take a sip of your tea when it has cooled, and pay attention to the sensation of the warmth passing through your lips. How does it taste?
Feel the warmth travel down your body all the way into your stomach.
Take a deep breath in from your diaphragm, hold for a few seconds, then exhale slowly.
As you drink your tea, try to slow down any racing or drifting thoughts in your mind.
Focus on the present moment and enjoy your warm cup of tea.
The more you can practise mindfulness exercises like this, the more you may find yourself to be relaxed, energised and centred throughout your days.
