Making History: PBS Advocacy for Weight Loss Medications

We’re proud to announce that Dr. Catherine Bacus, alongside 12 fellow colleagues from across Australia, has been working on a submission to government to finally make weight loss medications more accessible to patients who are living with obesity.

This coalition is led by Dr Mark Mellor and includes the current chair of the RACGP specific interest group – Obesity Management, Dr Terri-Lynne South, CEO of the Australian Diabetes Society, Prof Sof Andrikopoulos, President of NACOS (National Association of Clinical Obesity Services) A/Prof Sam Hocking and a number of other GPs with a special interest in weight management.

Over the past three months, this expert team has developed a comprehensive submission lobbying government to include weight loss medications on the PBS for the first time in Australian history. This represents a significant step toward recognising the stigma that people living with obesity experience and creating meaningful change in treatment accessibility.

This advocacy work could transform how weight loss treatment is perceived and accessed across Australia. No weight loss medications have ever been included on the PBS before, making this a potentially game-changing moment for patients nationwide.
