One of the most commonly asked questions we receive is about what we actually do here at Alevia Medical Weight Loss and how we help people to lose weight.

We are a weight loss clinic run by GPs who specialise in the management of overweight and obesity. We pride ourselves on helping our patients to achieve greater health and well-being through healthy eating, exercise and weight loss.

What to Expect in Your First Consultation

If you feel nervous, intimidated or maybe even a little sceptical ahead of your initial consultation with us, you’re not alone. Taking the first step in your weight loss journey can be a rollercoaster of overwhelming emotions, but our doctors and administrative staff are trained to support you every step of the way with gentleness and humanity.

In your first consultation, your doctor will undertake a thorough assessment of your overall health, any existing conditions you may have, your current medications, your lifestyle and other factors that may be contributing to your weight gain.

We will screen for health conditions that may be causing your weight gain, including genetic factors, as well as the effects that your excess weight may be having on your body. These may include high blood pressure, diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), obstructive sleep apnoea and mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Your doctor will take measurements including current weight, height, waist circumference and BMI. Using our advanced technology, we will then perform a body composition scan to complete an in-depth analysis of your physical health beyond just your weight. This will include your muscle mass, fat percentage, visceral fat and basal metabolic rate.

Together with your doctor, we will look at the goals you are seeking to achieve including a goal weight and other health improvements you’d like to see in your day-to-day life.

Bringing it All Together to Form a Treatment Plan

After a thorough assessment and screening, your doctor will work with you to draw on all of the information and determine what might be the weight loss option for you. Your treatment plan can always be re-evaluated and revised with your doctor as you journey together toward your weight loss goals.

The weight loss phase of our program is tailored to each individual patient, depending on their lifestyle preferences and health conditions. There is no “one size fits all” solution to weight loss – your treatment plan will take into account your lifestyle, existing health conditions and preferences.

Your doctor is in the best position to help you lose weight whilst making sure that your physical health is improving and monitoring your existing conditions during your weight loss journey.

Dietary Interventions

Our doctors can provide you with a range of dietary intervention options to help you lose weight. One of the most effective ways is a ketogenic diet, which can help to make you not feel hungry. We make the most of nature’s own natural appetite suppressant known as ketones, which can help to make you feel not as hungry in your weight loss journey. This may be achieved through safe meal replacement products or a low-carbohydrate diet.

There are plenty of other dietary options to lose weight too, including intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating, a Mediterranean or DASH diet.

We will take into account your dietary preferences and restrictions, such as lactose/fructose intolerances and vegetarianism. We will help you find the right dietary program that is going to work best for you and your lifestyle.

We also have a range of dietitians we work with who can provide you extra specific, tailored advice around dietary and meal plans, should you require it.

Our Lifestyle Program

As part of your treatment plan, we include a lifestyle program, which entails information about nutrition, exercise, breaking bad habits, dealing with hunger/cravings and stress/emotional eating.

Your doctor will teach you the science behind your weight gain and equip you to deal with some of the most common barriers that people experience in their weight loss journey.

Exercise

Your doctor will prescribe an exercise program for you as part of your treatment plan. We will make the most of the type/s of exercise that you enjoy, to help you improve your weight loss, and work within your physical limitations.

There is no necessity for a hard-core gym program – our exercises are gentle and can be modified to suit your capability.

The Two-Way Relationship between Mental Health and Weight Gain

Many people who feel depressed or anxious find that they can put on weight easily, when they use food as a comfort source. As a result, weight gain can then worsen their mood, self-esteem and depression/anxiety, which becomes an ongoing cycle.

When the common problems of depression, anxiety, emotional and binge eating are addressed, it can be easier to lose weight. Even more than that, the improvements in your mental health and well-being can create a positive flow-on effect to all areas of your life.

If you are suffering from depression, anxiety, stress or other mental health conditions, your doctor can provide you support to alleviate these issues whilst undertaking your weight loss journey. If required, we can also refer you to a psychologist for further support.

Weight Loss Medications

Medications can be used as part of your weight loss treatment plan. If you BMI is above 30, or above 27 with weight-related health conditions, you may need the assistance of medication to help you lose weight. Medication can also be beneficial for those who have previously undertaken a weight loss journey only to regain the weight, or those who particularly suffer with hunger and cravings.

There are a range of weight loss medications that can assist you with appetite control and hunger, which can provide you with a higher chance of keeping the weight loss long-term.

Your doctor, where appropriate, can prescribe medication to assist you, with ongoing support and monitoring.

Bariatric Surgery

Our weight loss clinic can also help to assess the need for, and prepare those who are planning to undertake, bariatric surgery to assist with their weight.

Our doctors can provide independent, professional advice around different kinds of weight loss surgeries, if it may be appropriate for you.

We can also help to achieve weight loss pre-surgery, in preparation for a safer and more effective surgery.

We’re Here to Help

Our doctors understand that it can be challenging to lose weight, which is why they are trained with the tools, resources and compassion to guide and support you, every step of the way.

We are passionate about helping our patients to achieve greater health and well-being.

We look forward to assisting you.
